Making the switch… at work

Posted on August 20, 2008 by in Blog | 1 Comment

After three years of employment at my company, my trusty ‘ol (piece of crap) Dell generic-workstation PC began clicking randomly as it entered the first throes of death. The computer must have known it was my work anniversary, because it literally died about a week after my 3-year date.

Anyway… I got to talking to my IT manager, and smoothly brought up the possibility of me switching to a Mac. Now, I’ve been a faithful cult-of-Mac member since mid-2004, and have since been subjected to the horrors of working on a PC at my job. I pushed my case up the ladder, and my boss (the owner of the company) who earlier overheard me talking to the VP (the #2 guy) looked up from his work and said, “Yeah… you need a Mac… it’s good for what you do with the graphics and stuff, right? Yeah, go ahead and get one.”

That was easy.

I can’t imagine that I’d have any issues with the new operating system. The only program that would be new to me on the Mac is Outlook; but honestly, how different can it be? I’m currently on the hunt for a Mac-to-Mac syncing program, or some sort of remote desktop application, should I need to access my work computer from the comfort of my bed one morning (should a bolt of inspiration strike me).

    Hey Joe,

Apple’s MobileMe service is great! seriously I had my doubts but the syncing with 10.5.6 now is killer, and it has the “back to my Mac” feature is killer too, the web-based client leave something to be desired for but with a Mac in the office and one home and hopefully an iPhone you should be all set. $100 a year get’s you 20 gigs of online storage an @me.com email address, back to my mac and tons of other cool stuff, check it. at me.com
