[Client Name] Lower School Dedication Ceremony
|
Shawmut's relationship with [Client Name] far exceeds the average Construction Manager-Client association. At the recent dedication ceremony for their Lower School building, Shawmut was singled out for praise, creating a representative moment in the excellent relationship [Client Name] and Shawmut have shared since beginning our first project on their Watertown campus in 2009.
From the beginning of this first project, the faculty, staff, and students at [Client Name] collaborated with Shawmut to allow their students to experience and learn from the building process. Among these efforts was the Ask [Name] program, in which Shawmut's Superintendent, [Name], answered questions from students about the construction taking place outside their classrooms. Another teaching tool was the tactile board, a reconfigurable display with materials from each phase of construction, complete with sight and Braille labels. Shawmut is known for the outstanding communication provided to owners and designers by their project teams, but in this case these tools helped foster communication with the end-users directly about the construction process.
Although experts at remaining inconspicuous during construction, the [Client Name] team jumped at the

opportunity to share their experience and knowledge with the student body. Shawmut team members made numerous visits to classrooms, and [Client Name] even themed their spring concert "construction sounds", and had Shawmut's Superintendent host the event.
The new Lower School building was designed to meet the educational, living and safety needs of roughly 60 Lower School students ages six to 15 who are blind or visually impaired, with or without other disabilities. Targeting LEED® Silver certification, the 54,000 square foot building was designed by Boston-based [Architect]. It boasts a photovoltaic array of 108 panels, a 1,000 square foot green roof, light shelves and daylight harvesting technology, and an energy dashboard to monitor energy usage.
Elsewhere on [Client Name]'s campus, Shawmut is working on the renovation of the 98,000 square foot original Lower School, as well as the construction of the new Center for Students and Technology. Shawmut's work at [Client Name] was recently featured on WCVB Boston's "Chronicle HD". Click here to view video from the program.

Building Maintenance Tips
|
Now that we're into warmer weather, we want to offer our clients some building-related startup tips. For example, did you know that it's a best practice to do a thorough irrigation system check before you pressurize the system with water? - Clean downspouts, gutters, and storm drains to ensure proper water flow.
- Perform a system check and startup: before charging the system with water, check sprinkler heads for freeze damage (from plows, shovels, ice, etc.). When charged, check the aim of all sprinkler heads, and replace as needed.
- For doors with mechanical opening devices mounted in the floor, make sure to open up the access panel to check for any sand/salt debris left from the winter.
- If you have a system that requires seasonal startups, take care of this sooner rather than later. Be sure to check belts and bearings, as these require regular maintenance. Bring in your vendor or manufacturer to do the seasonal startup on your mechanical systems.

| |
- Spring will call for more frequent filter change outs- less resistance through filters means that your systems don't work as hard, which yields an energy savings. Also, be sure to clean out your insect screens on any air intake louvers.
- Inspect your roof for winter ice damage; if at any time during the winter ice formed under shingles or flashing, the rainy Spring weather may cause leaks in these areas.
- Check the functionality of all GFI boxes and outdoor electrical points.
- Get on a program for lawn care/maintenance early on to save money. As warmer weather approaches, it may be more difficult (or expensive) to find a landscaper. Also, locate problem areas in your lawn early on- crab grass spreads quickly!
- Don't forget to test your emergency systems. Fire alarms, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors should all be checked regularly.

Shawmut Super a Hero
Back in November, Shawmut Superintendent [Name] was heading back to his car after a long day's work at a project in New York when he noticed a parking attendant staring off into the distance with a terrified look on his face. On the top parking level of the Port Authority Building, a young woman was sitting on the parapet, her feet dangling 100 feet over 8th Avenue and 40th Street. [Name] slowly approached the woman and quickly recognized her motive to be desperate. When she removed a necklace and began to hand it to [Name], he didn't let the opportunity pass. Grabbing her arm, he pulled her back from the edge, and talked with her until authorities arrived. When called a hero, [Name] retorted "You would have done the same thing; it just happens." For his heroic effort, [Name] was later awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by Port Authority of NY & NJ Police Superintendent [Name], 'In recognition of your quick and selfless action which resulted in saving the life of a distraught woman at the Port Authority Bus Terminal."
